Workshop: Language Description and Language Documentation Around the Baltic Sea

Workshop: Language Description and Language Documentation Around the Baltic Sea
Organized by the Department of Scandinavian Studies

17-18 September 2026

This workshop celebrates languages and linguistics around the Baltic Sea, bringing together researchers from Germany, The Netherlands, Danmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. The focus is on describing and interpreting linguistic systems, necessarily complemented by investigations on language use in diverse situations and registers. In sum, the workshop shows the fruitful combination of descriptive, contrastive, typological, diachronic and sociolinguistic perspectives. The investigated languages comprise modern standard varieties (Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian, Russian, Swedish, Danish, German), minority languages and regional varieties (Upper Sorbian, Lithuanian Romani, Latgalian, Estonian dialects) and historical varieties of Baltic and Slavonic languages.
